Using the Probe

Set the Probe near the center of the Trigger area.

Keep the gold triangle cursor in the center of the probe "eye" at all times, then L-Click the mouse.

While the dial is turning counter-clockwise, L-Click just as it approaches the "sweet spot" ( a gold region near the bottom of the dial). If you miss the sweet spot, just click the Cancel Button in the lower left corner of the screen and try until you are successful.

Here is an example which shows where
you should do the second L-Click.
Notice that the dial pointer has just
about reached the "sweet spot". When
the dial is spinning at full speed, clicking at this spot will allow the dial to drift into the gold area if your reflexes are at least average. PRACTICE!

Use the same procedure to identify the Mechanism and Delivery areas
with the probe.

Using the Disarm Tools

Select the BEST tool for the type of trap component. Using a tool which hasn't been designed to disarm the particular component will work, but the sweet spot will be much smaller, and you'll need to be a quicker clicker.

The Master's Recommendations for Trap Disarming

Timing. Although the dial will swing through the sweet spot a few times, it's best to develop your own timing and click at the same dial position every time.

Consistency. Try to refrain from allocating thief skill points to the Disarm or Lockpicking attributes. This will change the speed of the dial for Probing and when you are trying to develop your reflexes, the variation will actually make it MORE difficult to master. If you must add points, only add it once and keep that dial speed for the remainder of the game.

Make it easy on yourself ! Don't be afraid to cancel a Disarm session while probing, if things don't go your way. If you don't identify the trap component, you will need to disarm "in the dark" with the smallest sweet spot.

Roll with the punches. If you cause the trap to go off, don't worry, it will never kill a character. (Actually, the ideal time to attempt a trap is just after a difficult battle when the party's health is very low... nothing to lose!) Just go to the Priest or heal yourself. But be especially careful with traps that contain Poison Tanks. You may need to buy some Poison Antidote to restore your party's health.
Be flexible. As you learn to disarm more type of traps, and the list of traps gets longer, the disarm dial will turn slower. The decrease is very subtle for one trap type, but adding several types will slow the dial quite noticably.

DON'T USE DICE ROLL TRAP LOCK MODE! Besides permanently losing the loot contained inside some chests, it's just not as much fun as using reflex !
